Founded a century ago in 1895, Heian-jingu was built to commemorate 1,100 years since the birth of Japan’s ancient capital in Kyoto, known as Heian-kyo. Visitors are first welcomed by a 24-meter gigantic torii gate; inside, the shrine grounds feature buildings and gardens that have carried on the traditions of Heian-kyo.
