Widely known as “the temple of maple leaves,” Eikan-do grew out of a mountain villa belonging to an aristocratic man of letters in the 9th century. Numerous intellectuals have visited this temple ever since, and Eikan-do has frequently served as the theme of poetry and music throughout its long history.
